Changing Fruit Label Legislation
When does it come into effect?
New regulations will be enforced by February 2028 and will require adhesive fruit labels to be certified home compostable. As of 12th February 2028, all fruit or vegetable labels will be required to adhere to legislation for composting. France, New Zealand and Australia have already started to restrict non-compostable labels (2026). All EU countries will comply from February 2028.
The label legislation is to prevent microplastic contamination in compost and soil.
What does that mean for printing companies?
When legislation impacts fruit and vegetable sellers in 2028, the labelling industry must comply with the law. Plastic materials, such as polyethylene or polypropylene labels must be replaced with home compostable / biodegradable materials that do not leave any residues.
Meaning that printing companies will be reliant on coating companies that can produce sustainable label stock that is credible, reliable and most importantly, sustainable.
